Television debut

I never thought that my television debut would be one of my Instagram photos... Alas, the cool cats at SoundDiego briefly showed a shot I took of The Beautiful View at Bar Pink on their local music show that airs after SNL! Be sure to follow me on Instagram while you're at it!

theSTART @ The Belly Up Tavern 9-16-12

It occurred to me that on the way to see this show that I've been in following the highly energetic theSTART for over 10 years now. The band consists of power-couple Aimee Echo (Human Waste Project) and multi-talented guitarist Jamie Miller (drummer of: Snot, ...Trail of Dead, Nighthorse) as well as bassist Lance Webber (Man will surrender) and incredibly skilled Chelsea Davis on drums (also of the side-project with Aimee & Jamie called Normandie, which I equally adore [perhaps even more!!!]).

While I typically avoid the 30 mile trek up to the Belly Up due to the cost of gas and hefty ticket prices, in this case it was totally worth it... primarily because it's been a couple of years since I've had my "fix" of theSTART, but also the sound quality at the Belly Up is consistently voted the best in San Diego, and from a photography standpoint, the lighting is amongst the best as well. The Beautiful View & Queen Caveat-SDMT 2012 @ U-31

This was my second year shooting (unofficially) The San Diego Music Thing that is our own small-scale version of Austin, TX's South By Southwest, which I also attended this year. Given the expense of the wristbands that let you bounce around different venues and showcases, I opted to hang the entire night at U-31 in North Park and I'm glad I did.

I showed up to support one of my favorite local band The Beautiful View, but I also was fortunate to check out Los Angeles's Queen Caveat. I showed up right as they were starting and was so mesmerized by the performance, that half-way through the set I looked down to my pint of Guinness and realized that my camera was still in my bag and I wasn't taking photos... it was a truly dynamic and polished spectacle. Then as per usual, The Beautiful View powered through and delivered an especially tight and sonic set. Please enjoy!

2012 FYF Fest - Quicksand, Refused, Sleigh Bells

If you would have told me this time last year that I would be shooting two of my top 10 favorite bands, both who have been broken up for over a decade, I would have said you were high. Alas, Quicksand and Refused, both freshly reunited and are playing with the same intensity as if they were still in their early twenties. As luck would have it, and if my mind wasn't already blown, this was my first credentialed show shooting from the photo pit; you have 2 1/2 songs and that's all the time you have to shoot... except for me. My good friend Ray Edwards had front row against the rail, so as soon as they started shuffling us out of the pit, I hopped the rail and shot the rest of Quicksand's set from front and center... WIN!

How did I get this photo pass you ask? I happened to befriend Walter Schreifels (Quicksand singer/guitarist) about 7 years ago and we've kept in touch over the years. I did him a couple of solids, and in return like the phenomenal guy he is, he was able to hook up a photo & media pass for the FYF Fest. Out of the 40+ bands, somehow the VIP tents and the line for the food truck kept us from seeing much of the bands, however we did catch a few tunes from The Vaselines, Fucked Up, Sleigh Bells, and full sets from Quicksand and Refused.
